On 31st May, the Opening Ceremony was held at Bishan Stadium. Though it was raining, it did not dampen the spirits of all the athletes. The ceremony went smoothly with several performances by students from special schools, including our own wushu team.
Bowling and Soccer took place at The Chevrons and at NUS Soccer field respectively. Our Bowlers included Irwan, Jia Chen, Wei Xiang, Ming Yi, Kimiki and Jabbariah. Our Soccer Team members were Desmond, Khidir, Faiz, Kiefer, Razique, Rifae and Zani. Amidst the excitement displayed at the lanes of the bowling alley, our bowlers concentrated and focused on the pins ahead. Individually and as a team, our students performed well. Not only did they enjoyed the game, but they also won the applause from their peers.
Our Bocce Team (Chin Yong, Crystal and Mabel) battled it out under the hot weather at the NUS Field. These students are from our ASD programme and we are proud of their achievement.
The Badminton Team (Huey Jye, Min Yan, Wei Bing, Zong Xian, Chun Boon and Gerald) did a good job and exhibited the skills they have acquired during their CCA in school.
Our Swimmers (Zi Ling, Merissa and Wei Kang) did their best at UWC Dover Campus swimming pool. The Track & Field Team (Desmond, Khidir, Faiz, Kiefer, Daryl, Eddie, Haiqal and Razique) also had to battle the hot weather and themselves as they were tired out from their soccer games in the past 2 days. Nevertheless, the boys persevered and showed their fighting spirit all the way to the finishing line.
Throughout the 4 days, with the encouragement and support from our teaching staff, Principal and Vice-Principals, our Metta athletes demonstrated the attitude and spirit as stated in the Special Olympics slogan, which reads “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in my attempt”. And we are proud they displayed the Special Olympics spirit throughout the games, even when they faced challenges.
The school is pleased to share the joy of our students’ achievements. Besides winning, they have learned the spirit of sportsmanship, exercise self-discipline and teamwork as they have to follow instructions closely, cheer for their peers and show strong team spirit in many of the matches. The school will continue to provide opportunities such as the Special Olympic Games for our students so that they can display their talents, develop confidence and a belief in themselves.
Here’s a summary of our achievements:
The games ended with the Closing Ceremony held at Suntec Convention Center. It is indeed a memorable event for our athletes!
We believe they are looking forward to the next Special Olympic Games!
