Lunar New Year is one of the Chinese festivals celebrated by Singaporeans. In Metta School, we look forward to this celebration every year. However, this year, we celebrated the event in a different manner. To ensure safe distancing and the implementation of Safety Management Measure (SMM), we hold our celebrations in our classrooms through zoom instead of gathering together in the school hall like previous years.
On 11February 2021, the event began with our Principal giving CNY greetings. In her speech, she reminded us that we need to remember to practice safe distancing, personal hygiene and being social responsible.
Our very own Lion dance troupe performs every year during the CNY celebrations. This year, without exception, our lion dance troupe displayed an amazing and stunning performance, and all the students were engrossed watching it. For our Lions, instead of performance in a pair, each lion was performed by a student; this is in consideration of the SMM.
Prior to the actual day of celebrations, each class was tasked to design ang pao covers. We are grateful for the staff in our Allied Health Department, who were the judges for this competition. They took their time and effort to go around the classes to look at all the designs for judging. There were also winners for the best dressed students.
After a short presentation on Chinese New Year, we moved on to the Total Defence Day segment.
The theme for 2021’s Total Defence Day (TTD) is “Together We Keep Singapore Strong” which focuses on the many ways we can put Total Defence into action in our everyday lives.
We mark Total Defence Day on 15 February every year as a reminder of what could happen to us because it was this day that we fell into the hands of the Japanese. After a short presentation on TTD, we had a time of quiz using kahoot! The students were excited and they enjoyed the activity very much.
To complete the day, every student was treated with two delicious muffins and some CNY goodies. They enjoyed the snacks and went home happily.
