Educational Model

Allied Health Services

Our students have needs in different areas, sometimes beyond what a teacher can do to support them.  We take a multidisciplinary approach and have a team of allied health professionals to see to some of these needs.  Through individualized programmes, these students will be in a stronger position to access the school curriculum. 

Psychologist

Psychological services at Metta School are concerned with students’ learning development and socio-emotional well-being, working closely with teachers and parents. The team of psychologists carry out a wide range of tasks with the aims of maximizing students’ learning potential and improving their socio-emotional skills.

Speech Therapists

To assist students in achieving their educational outcomes, our team of speech therapists use specialized knowledge of:
  • Speech
  • Language
  • Social Communication
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
  • Voice
  • Fluency
  • Eating and Swallowing

Occupational Therapists

We aim to improve student’s performance of tasks and activities important for successful school functioning. Our team of occupational therapists address functional skills in the educational environment and support students who have difficulties.

Social Work Services

We aim to enable our students to function more effectively in the school by providing emotional, social, financial and familial support through a range of services such as casework and counselling, groupwork, family sessions and family education.

The team of psychologists provide:
  • Comprehensive Assessment Services (on a needs basis). 
  • Pe-Admission Screening (for applicants who are not referred by Ministry of Education). 
  • School-Based Behavioural Intervention and Counselling.  
  • Consultation for Teachers and Parents/Caregivers.  

Speech & Language Therapy Services

To assist students in achieving their educational outcomes, our team of speech therapists use specialized knowledge of:

The team of speech therapists:
  • Identify and assess students with communication difficulties who require school-based speech therapy intervention.
  • Provide intervention to enhance students’ communication skills necessary for participation in the curriculum.
  • Assist the education team to adjust communication demands of the curriculum to ensure student participation and achievement of educational goals.
  • Consults with and provides resources to school staff, caregivers and the school community.

Occupational Therapy Services

We aim to improve student’s performance of tasks and activities important for successful school functioning. Our team of occupational therapists address functional skills in the educational environment and support students who have difficulties with:
  • Gross Motor Skills
  • Fine Motor Skills (Handwriting & Manipulative skills,)
  • Cognitive & Visual Perceptual Skills
  • Motor Planning (praxis), Balance and Coordination skills
  • Sensory Integration Abilities (Processing, Registration, Modulation and Discrimination skills)
  • Pre-Vocational and Vocational Skills
  • Play and Social Skills
  • Self-Care Skills
Occupational therapy services are as follows:
  • Direct intervention: Therapists conduct individual and group therapy sessions with students to improve, restore, maintain or prevent deterioration in the skills required for functioning in the school environment.
  • Indirect intervention: Therapists work together with teachers to carry out functional skill training activities for students. 
  • Provide consultation and support for parents/caregivers by recommending home-based training activities to achieve goals in functional skills development.
  • Conduct assessment and training for our Vocational Programme students to develop better work-related skills.

Social Work Services

We aim to enable our students to function more effectively in the school by providing emotional, social, financial and familial support through a range of services such as casework and counselling, groupwork, family sessions and family education.

The team of social workers:
  • Address the social, financial, emotional and behavioural concerns of students and their family members, taking into consideration their mental and physical well-being.  This could take the form of individual or group sessions.
  • Work with parents and caregivers, equipping and empowering them through information and education to build a better relationship with their child and the school.
  • Collaborate with teachers, other allied health professionals and external agencies to create a better environment in support of the student’s learning.
